Shark Bay is a very large marine environment – open, crystal clear water, lush seagrass meadows and healthy reef edges. The tides and currents keep things stirred up, and the fish are on the chew 12 months a year. Water temps are great, the baitfish are in = predators are on the hunt folks!

Whether fishing the shallows, anchoring up in Denham Channel, or trolling the deeper edges — there’s some action to be had.
Whiting
Best Spots for Whiting
Whiting are forming up in schools over the shallow flats off Monkey Mia and Denham. They are thick on the sandbanks, particularly when they push in close on a rising tide. These are kid- and family-friendly (easy-to-catch) and delicious in the pan.
Best Rigs & Baits
All in a light sense of course: size 4–6 long shank hooks, pinch of red tube or bead and a running sinker rig. Fresh prawns, squid strips or even bits of worm do the job. For a great time, flicking little surface poppers or soft plastics across the flats can get smashed.
Snapper
Where to Find Them
The Shark Bay region is known for its pink snapper, and they’re biting well this month. Head to the deeper holes and channels off Denham, and some of the rubble ground around Dirk-Hartog-Island. Early mornings and evenings are best as they push up to feed.
Snapper Snapper are still prolific in Shark Bay this month as per the most recent fishing report.
Best Tackle & Techniques
Mullet fillet, squid or fresh whiting frames bottom fished will attract the bigger fish. If you are a lures fisho, big soft plastics and slow jigs work as well. Just keep in mind bag limits and size restrictions – Shark Bay has pink snapper management zones, so check the Recfishwest app before you go.

Mackerel
Deep Water & Offshore Tips
Spanish and school mackerel are being found along the deeper drop-offs and reef edges. Search for birds working bait schools, or troll lures along current lines. These speed demons are a true gear check – if you prefer action, this is your fight.

Ballooning & Drifting RigsAmong the most popular ways to pursue them is to drift or balloon with a live bait out the back while you bottom fish. Another good option is to troll deep-diving hardbodies or metal slices. … and a bit of wire trace – they’ll turn mono into tiny bits in no time.
Other Species on the Bite
Bluebone
You could do worse than those bluebone (blackspot tusk fish ) from Shark Bay. You’ll find them over coral patches and drop-offs. They hit hard and play dirty, so be prepared with the heavy tackle.
